Only 2 Things Last Forever - 1 Peter 1.24-25

For, “All men are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, 25 but the word of the Lord stands forever.”
When I was a sophomore in college, I heard a man say, "There are only two things that last forever. The Word of God and people." I remember thinking as a 19 year old that I wanted to spend the rest of my life getting to know the Scriptures and serving people. 36 years later I can say that that was one of the best decisions I've made in my life.
Are you taking the time to invest in the only two things that last forever?

No Guarantees

SOLANA BEACH, Calif. (AP) — A shark believed to be a great white killed a 66-year-old swimmer with a single, giant bite across both legs Friday as the man trained with a group of triathletes. Dave Martin, a retired veterinarian from Solana Beach, was attacked at San Diego County's Tide Beach around 7 a.m. Martin was taken to a lifeguard station for emergency treatment but was pronounced dead at the scene...
Can you imagine this? A guy retires. Livin' the dream in CA. Goes out for a swim and training. Bit and dies.
Makes me think of how fragile and uncertain life can really be.
Every day is indeed a gift. Are you living it to the fullest?

Old Men Explorers

My good friend John Hambrick gave me this T.S. Eliot quote,
Old men ought to be explorers
Here and there does not matter
We must be still and still moving
Into another intensity
For a further union, a deeper communion
Through the dark cold and the empty desolation.

I love the idea of being an explorer into another intensity.

Inexpressible and Glorious Joy - 1 Pet.1.8

I have just finished a 7 month reading and study of the gospel of John. I told you I read for depth and not distance. It was the most meaningful and rich study I have done in that book. My practice is to go from a gospel to an epistle and I chose 1 Peter. This morning I was reading 1 Peter 1.8-9 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
I asked myself this question, "when was the last time I experienced inexpressible and glorious joy at the thought of my salvation"? It seems too long. I want to take the time to think again of this great salvation and experience this kind of joy. You?
Are you experiencing inexpressible and glorious joy?

Use Power To Love and Serve-John 19.11

John 19.10-11 “Do you refuse to speak to me?” Pilate said. “Don’t you realize I have power either to free you or to crucify you?” Jesus answered, “You would have no power over me if it were not given to you from above.
I got to thinking about power and authority. I realized once again that all power and authority comes from the Father in heaven above. Jesus, the most powerful Person on earth, used His power to love and serve others. I sensed the Lord say, "John, use the power I gave you to love and serve Me and other people".
What about you? Do you see your power and authority coming from above? How are you using it? For yourself or others?

Lord, As I Grow Older

Recently some friends of ours attended a Tres Dias weekend here in Georgia. I think it was life changing for both of them. They shared this very cool prayer.
Lord, as I grow older, I would like to be known as
Available rather than a hard-worker;
Compassionate more than competent;
Content not driven;
Generous instead of rich;
Gentle over being powerful;
Good listener over being a great communicator;
Loving vs. quick or bright;
Reliable not famous;
Sacrificial instead of successful;
Self-controlled rather than exciting;
Thoughtful more than gifted.
I want to be a foot washer.
Amen.
What about you?
For what do you want to be known?

Core Beliefs

I recently heard a speaker talk about "Core Beliefs of the Christian Faith" versus "Fringe Beliefs. The following would be a partial list of what I believe.
1. The inspiration and infallibility of Scripture: “All scripture is given by inspiration of God” (II Timothy 3:16).
2. The deity and humanity of Christ: “The Word [Jesus] was with God, and the Word was God. … And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us” (John 1:1–14).
3. The virgin birth of Christ: The angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, “Fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife: for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Ghost” (Matthew 1:20). This fulfilled Isaiah’s prophecy: “A virgin shall conceive, and bear a son” (Isaiah 7:14).
4. The resurrection of Christ: “If Christ be not risen, then is our preaching in vain, and your faith is also vain” (I Corinthians 15:14). (S
5. The sinfulness of man: “As by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned” (Romans 5:12).
6. The salvation of man through faith in Christ alone: “By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8–9).
7. The imminent return of Christ: “The Lord himself shall descend from heaven … Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord” (I Thessalonians 4:16–17).
What are your "Core Beliefs"?
